My introduction to the one-man band, Marsh Dweller, is rather peculiar; I was digging around on Metallum and stumbled across him and his sole demo, I found the guy on Facebook sent and asked him if he would know where to find a copy of the aptly titled “Demo” demo. He replied and said the demo was garbage and ended up sending me a copy of this album instead. Now, what I realized was that he sent me a copy of the album just days after it had been formally announced by Eihwaz Records and there were no track premiers, no album streams—nothing—yet I found myself in the peculiarly enjoyable situation of having a copy and for that I’d like to say thank you to John Owen Kerr.  Continue reading

“Gore metal” is easily one of the most divisive and polarizing genres of metal. Most of the major camps agree that the vocals are too much, the beats too blasting, and the subject mature immature or unoriginal. It’s hard to the inherent juvenile factor that comes from something like gore metal—frequent references not only to bodily dismemberment but also scatological and biological functions sound more of the reign of elementary school students rather than metalheads. Hitten – State of Shock (2016)

Hitten are a more recent heavy metal band from Murcia and State of Shock is their second full-length album coming out just a couple years after their first. I had known about Hitten for a while, but had never bothered to listen to anything by them until a respected friend mentioned how much he enjoyed this particular release and so I went to pick it up. It took less than a minute into the album before I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after hearing the insane intro. Sometimes intros can be deceiving though, so I suspended any judgement until I had listened to the whole thing all the way through.  Continue reading

In December 2014 I named Fallujah’s The Flesh Prevails as my album of the year. I then proceeded to not listen to it since. I loved the album for combining many subtle differences in the multitude of metal styles into a singular, cohesive sound which sounded ultra-modern without straying from a familiar sound. To borrow a phrase, it seemed to me “as forward thinking as a Ronin sculpture on a freight train.” However, my own personal tastes shifted somewhat from the style, and with few other comparable bands I enjoyed, they became much neglected.  Continue reading

Reapermanser – The Reaper Await Damnation (2016)

Reapermanser comes ripping into the scene with their debut The Reaper Awaits Damnation. It’s a great slab yet again in one of my favorite families of extreme metal–filthy black/punk that rings true of street metal. It’s all about the filth and the mess, getting up in one’s face. The fact that Reapermanser hails from Miami is another testament to this global reach of extreme metal. No longer are we limited to our local scenes, and sounds can find themselves anywhere on Earth with a router.

Reapermanser’s sound heavily emphasizses punk and thrash elements to drive forward their pieces, interspersed with metal transitions and structures. The songs aim to utilize punk aggression and tempo to drive the and promote a lively atmosphere, thus abandoning the potential mystical side of black/thrash that one would find in something like Destroyer 666. This rings true much more of Abigail and Gehennah, but it does have that down home dirtiness of something like Discharge or Sacrilege. I wouldn’t say that the sound is overly dominated by punk, but they are using punk aspects to come to the same conclusions. This combination proves to work well–the songs very easily and it is an incredible listenable album with some serious depth that requires multiple listens to understand. That being said, it is neither pretentious or overtly high minded, as good black/thrash/punk should be.

Unfortunately the production seems to be a major detriment here, in particular the drums–they are far too loud (and possibly triggered) and they do not gel with the guitar or vocals, making the whole record feel stilted. It’s a shame too, as most of the songs do hold up incredibly well despite their lack of tempo diversity.

The Reaper Awaits Damnation is a well written record that will absolutely appeal to previous fans of the genre, but the production may make it a bit more of a hit or miss for some. Either way, I look forward to Reapermanser’s efforts in the future and hopefully they’ll stick around and give us more raw American black/punk.

Ashbringer – Yūgen (2016)

Yūgen is the second full-length album from Ashbringer, an atmospheric black metal band from the States. It is another album in a style that is becoming more and more familiar to me as more bands stumble upon it. I believe that Ashbringer shares a similar approach to their music as Amiensus and Oak Pantheon. These three bands (among a few others) share a sound that approaches atmospheric black metal from many different sides, combining progressive song structures with folk, ambience, and epic flourishes. The result is a more energetic atmospheric black metal, less sorrowful and bleak, and Ashbringer navigate that space brilliantly.  Continue reading

Philadelphia are yet another classic eighties band who decided to regroup and release a comeback album decades after their inception. This kind of endeavour rarely turns out well and statistically speaking, most people would be better off ignoring such efforts in favour of finding music from newer bands. However, there are cases where these comeback projects have yielded some amazing albums. Unfortunately, this is not one of those cases. To be fair, their sound hasn’t changed much from their earlier works, and the production is leagues ahead of their early stuff, but as everybody knows, it takes a lot more than decent production to produce something memorable.  Continue reading
