Some time around 1995, I was still in the early stages of discovering metal and spent a great deal of time listening to the local rock radio station hoping to hear a Metallica or Megadeth song. On one such occasion, I heard an advertisement for a concert: Mercyful Fate and Solitude Aeturnus. I had never heard of either band, but they sounded interesting, so the next day I had my parents drive me to the local Blockbuster Music store and had myself a listen. Beyond the Crimson Horizon immediately became my new favorite album. The fantastic atmosphere of the music and the magic of Rob Lowe’s voice fit perfectly with the D&D rulebooks and Lovecraft stories in which I was ensconced at the time.

Pack a bowl and rip your bong, you’re in for one hell of a journey. I was immediately immersed by Elder’s Lore because of the hypnotising quality of its riffs combined with the sheer scale of its songs and the sense of awe they invoke. Lore presents the band’s psychedelic brand of doom beautifully and is bound to be on numerous “album of the year” lists, including my own.
