Band: The Loom of Time

Album: NihilReich

Genre: Black/Doom/Prog/Metalcore

Label: Independent

Wow, what an incredibly…weird…record. Aussie doomsters have some interesting interpretations of two relatively secure genres—being black metal and doom metal—yet they throw in some hyper-melodic metal into the mix alongside modern metalcore type riffs and breakdowns. I was expecting some nice, morose doom—maybe even a little on the cheesy side—and that is not at all what you get in this record.  Continue reading

Pÿlon – A Lament (2016)

Author: Dave

Band: Pÿlon

Album: A Lament

Genre: Epic Doom Metal

Label: Roxx Records

Pÿlon are not exactly a well-known band. But this recent Swiss doom metal outfit is, if nothing else, one of the most hard-working and committed bands out there. A Lament marks their seventh full-length album since forming shortly after the turn of the century. Rarely do bands even make it to seven albums, let alone accomplish that in just over a decade. But to be frank, Pÿlon’s output has rarely been consistent. Some of their earlier records boasted playing times well in excess of an hour, and their long-windedness was a turn off to many listeners. Each album always had its set strong tracks, but a lot of the other tracks failed to deliver.   Continue reading

Author: Gay For Gary Oldman

Artist: Messa

Album: Belfry (2016)

Genre: Doom Metal

Label: Aural Music

Right here, Italian doomsters Messa have a fantastic record which I hope to see snowball into a titan at the end of year finals. Part drone, part epic, part traditional, a hint of stoner and all fuzz, Messa master both atmosphere and melody on their debut BelfryContinue reading

Artist: The Morningside

Album: Yellow

Label: BadMoodMan Music

Genre: Atmospheric Doom

Yellow is the fourth album from Russian melancholic doom metal act The Morningside. I have been following The Morningside ever since hearing their wonderful debut, The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past, a beautiful love letter to nature seen through the eyes of dour Russians.   Continue reading

Krigsgrav – Waves of Degradation (2016)

Author: Gay For Gary Oldman

Artist: Krigsgrav

Album: Waves of Degradation

Label: Bindrune Recordings

Rating: 7/10

Krigsgrav. The name sounds like they’re from Scandinavia. They play a blend of atmospheric doomy black metal. Imagine my surprise when their Archives page tells me they’re from Texas. I suppose if Australia’s Mournful Congregation can release The June Frost, this isn’t too much of a stretch. Rooted primarily in atmospheric black metal, Krigsgrav don’t buy too heavily into the Cascadian sound of their northern neighbours, instead opting for a bleaker offering with touches of doom and folk. Album: Conduit (2016)

Genre: Progressive Doom Metal

Label: Independent

Hailing from England, King Goat play what can only be described as David Draiman of Disturbed providing vocals for a new Candlemass album, released in 2014 when the band had to stand up next to other doom releases by Yob and Thou in both scope and atmosphere. Continue reading

Wyrd – Death of the Sun (2016)

WYRDDOTS

Author: Crono

Artist: Wyrd

Album: Death of the Sun

Label: Moribund Records

Genre: Black/Folk/Doom Metal

Wyrd is a band that is near and dear to me, having spent many of my university years listening to their albums, Heathen, Vargtimmen 1 & 2, and The Ghost Album getting the most frequent rotation. Imagine my delight when after seven years of silence, Wyrd drops a new album without almost no warning. I was very intrigued by this new album because of the addition of several members to the band. Almost all previous Wyrd albums have been the creation of one person, Narqath, but on Death of the Sun, the band is now a six-piece! Going from one person to six people is quite a large jump, so a change in sound is impossible to avoid. But now time for the real question: how does the album hold up? As far as I’m concerned, very well! Continue reading

Black Cobra – Imperium Simulacra (2016)

Album: Imperium Simulacra

Label: Season of Mist

Genre: Sludge/Doom Metal

Black Cobra is one of those bands with a consistent, distinct, and immediately identifiable vision for their music, and they deliver on it every single time, without fail. If you like your sludge fast, aggressive, and filled to the brim with outstanding riffs, you can select any one of the San Francisco duo’s five albums and find great satisfaction.  Continue reading
