Nekro Drunkz – Lavatory Carnage (2016)

Artist: Nekro Drunkz

Album: Lavatory Carnage

Genre: Death/Thrash Metal/Grindcore

Label: Moribund Records

“Gore metal” is easily one of the most divisive and polarizing genres of metal. Most of the major camps agree that the vocals are too much, the beats too blasting, and the subject mature immature or unoriginal. It’s hard to the inherent juvenile factor that comes from something like gore metal—frequent references not only to bodily dismemberment but also scatological and biological functions sound more of the reign of elementary school students rather than metalheads. Despite their frequent enjoyment of items that are considered “low culture,” for many people gore metal steeps too low.    Continue reading

When Cannons Fade – Bolt Thrower & Bolt Thrower Worship

Author: Goldensundown

In light of the recent news of Bolt Thrower’s disbanding so close to the one year anniversary of Martin Kearns’ (drummer) death, I’ve decided to create a playlist in memory of one of the most stalwart death metal groups to have pounded the drums of war. Personal favourite Bolt Thrower tracks up first followed by some killer bands playing similar styles of death. R.I.P. Martin Kearns and R.I.P. Bolt Thrower. Continue reading

Blood Incantation – Starspawn (2016)

Author: T.K. White

Band: Blood Incantation

Album: Starspawn

Genre: Death Metal

Label: Dark Descent Records

Wow, what do I even say about this record? I mean, it’s so hard to describe, yet unquestionably good. No doubts, but that is something Blood Incantation is used to. With a handful of demos dating back from 2013, and EP and a split in 2015, this year we finally see what Blood Incantation at their largest. Or should I say most expansive? Either way, there is no question that the album is phenomenal.  Continue reading

The Wretched End – In These Woods, From These Mountains (2016)

Band: The Wretched End

Album: In These Woods, From These Mountains

Genre: Black/Death Metal

Label: Indie Recordings

The Wretched End is sort of a supergroup headed by Samoth of Emperor and features Cosmo of Windir and Nils Fjellstrom of Dark Funeral. The Wretched End started off a rather generic blackened thrash band and progressed towards blackened death metal with each release. In These Woods, From These Mountains, is certainly following along that track, for better or worse. Truthfully, I did not find the bands two previous full-lengths very exciting at all. Forgettable riffs with vocals that serve little to no purpose and the drumming barely draws attention to itself. Sadly, this record is no different.  Continue reading

Vanhegld – Temple of Phobos (2016)

Author: TK White

Band: Vanhegld

Album: Temple of Phobos

Genre: Death Metal

Label: Pulverised Records

(Ed: The fetid dead have arisen once more! We are back and resuming our hopefully regular posting schedule!)

I have had zero introduction to Vanhegld, but I figured these dudes are on Dark Descent so it has to be good and—spoilers—it is. These Swedes really know how to riff. They also know how to create some absolutely punishing atmospheres. Now, before we get too deep, I should reiterate that I had no idea who these guys were. I checked out their page on the Metal Archives and saw that two bands under “Similar Artist” were Asphyx and At the Gates. Not exactly two bands that you would often see coupled together, but it works. It actually describes the band pretty well. Truthfully, I think the best band to equate them to would be label-mates, Blood Incantation. That being said, the band definitely leans more towards the Asphyx sound, which is incredibly evident right out of the gate (no pun intended).  Continue reading

Withered – Grief Relic (2016)

Author: T.K. White

Band: Withered

Album: Grief Relic

Genre: Black/Death Metal

Label: Season of Mist

Withered is an odd band considering they fell apart, yet managed to hang on by a thread which happens to be named Mike Thompson. Thankfully, after everyone left Thompson he was able to find other prominent artists (Colin Marston, Ethan McCarthy) to help cauterize the wound; however, that is not so much the case, but I will get that in a moment.
