Hitten are a more recent heavy metal band from Murcia and State of Shock is their second full-length album coming out just a couple years after their first. I had known about Hitten for a while, but had never bothered to listen to anything by them until a respected friend mentioned how much he enjoyed this particular release and so I went to pick it up. It took less than a minute into the album before I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after hearing the insane intro. Sometimes intros can be deceiving though, so I suspended any judgement until I had listened to the whole thing all the way through.  Continue reading

Band: Savage Master

Album: With Whips and Chains

Genre: Heavy metal

Label: High Roller Records

Savage Master are a newer heavy metal band that have just released their second full-length album since starting a few years ago. And if that level of output weren’t already noteworthy enough, they also managed to do something even more remarkable and that is to produce a sophomore album that is better than their first one. And seeing as how the first one was already a stellar example of old school heavy metal, if you enjoyed that one, you’re in for a real treat with this one.  Continue reading

Philadelphia are yet another classic eighties band who decided to regroup and release a comeback album decades after their inception. This kind of endeavour rarely turns out well and statistically speaking, most people would be better off ignoring such efforts in favour of finding music from newer bands. However, there are cases where these comeback projects have yielded some amazing albums. Unfortunately, this is not one of those cases. To be fair, their sound hasn’t changed much from their earlier works, and the production is leagues ahead of their early stuff, but as everybody knows, it takes a lot more than decent production to produce something memorable.  Continue reading

South Americans have never been strangers to heavy metal, and over the last few decades, some of their countries have borne scenes that rival the best of those in North America and Europe. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear Adamanthium, a newer Argentine band, doing their best to keep that old school heavy metal sound alive. Their traditional influences are immediately recognisable, mostly in tone and overall execution, as opposed to specific, easily traceable riffs. In fact, their sound would have fit nicely amidst a good number of NWOBHM bands if it weren’t for the Spanish lyrics.

After a series of demos and EP releases scattered out over the last several years, the Australian heavy metal band Tarot have released their first full-length album this year. Their sound is a polished and enchanting, and is a compelling musical statement borrowing equally from heavy metal giants like Iron Maiden as well as from classic rock greats like Uriah Heep. The end result is an album that is at once melodic, punchy, engaging, and captivating. More critical heavy metal listeners might balk at the clean production, but as clean as it is, it’s far from sterile, and the deceptively simple approach to their compositions does more than make up for that.  Continue reading

Silver Machine are a French heavy metal band who have managed to eke out a couple demos over the last few years and have just released their full-length debut, III – The Sound of the Shell. They are certainly of a more traditional slice of metal, with a very simple and stripped-down approach to their music. You will not find any silliness in this release: there is no ridiculous showmanship or any annoying over-production. What you will find is the absolute minimum number of components to produce a decent, quality metal album.  Continue reading

Inception – The True Face Behind the Smile (2016)

Band: Inception

Album: The True Face Behind the Smile

Genre: Heavy metal

Inception are a new heavy metal band from Costa Rica who have recently released this little gem of an old school album. The album begins with one of those slow and melancholy orchestral introductions accompanied by a lead guitar, which may lead you to believe that this is some new power metal band ready to cover you in a tonne of cheese. But it’s actually the opposite of that. This is just a nice and moving way of opening their short but sweet collection of fast riffs and catchy hooks. I should point out before going on that this intro is actually a well done composition, and not just some low-effort synth effects.  Continue reading
