Mare Cognitum is a band that has been around for a little bit and is fairly well known within the atmospheric black metal scene. It’s the creation of Jacob Buczarski from California, and he writes and records all the music himself. Now, one-man black metal bands are not new, and the frequency that Mare Cognitum releases music is not new either, but the quality of each release is something to behold. I don’t think Jacob has ever released a song that he isn’t completely satisfied lives up to his amazing standard. Luminiferous Aether is the band’s fourth album and continues this trend of extremely high quality music.

Artist: A Diadem of Dead Stars

Album: Kingdoms Bathed in Golden Light

Label: Independent

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal

A Diadem of Dead Stars is a band I have been following since their inception with 2014’s The Mist Bearer. While I thought the band had some potential, nothing really jumped out at me as really exciting. They have since released a few brief demos and EPs, culminating in their sophomore full length, Kingdoms Bathed in Golden Light. While the band’s sound has not drastically changed in the brief two years of their existence, I feel like Kingdoms Bathed in Golden Light is a stronger album that once again demonstrates this band’s potential, as well as some fairly consistent growth.   Continue reading

Artist: Harakiri for the Sky

Album: III: Trauma

Label: Art of Propaganda

Genre: Post-Black Metal

The follow-up to 2014’s amazing Aokigahara has finally come! III: Trauma is Harakiri for the Sky’s third full length album. Their second album, Aokigahara, was an amazing piece of music, and it made my top 10 albums list for that year. There are some really gorgeous riffs on that album, and Harakiri for the Sky was able to iron out all of the issues in production and pacing that held their debut back. The question that I was constantly asking while waiting for this album to drop was: will it live up to AokigaharaContinue reading

Band: ColdWorld

Album: Autumn

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal

Label: Cold Dimensions

Finally, the new ColdWorld has landed. It’s a pretty big deal – for those who don’t know, ColdWorld’s debut album, Melancholie², is lauded as one of the defining albums of the depressive black metal movement. It was released way back in 2008, in the “heyday” of the DSBM movement. Most considered the ColdWorld project ended, counting away the 8 years of silence from the band. But here we are, Autumn has finally been released as the follow-up to that brilliant debut. Fair warning: things have changed. Continue reading

Névoa – Re Un (2016)

Artist: Névoa

Album: Re Un

Label: Avantgarde Music

Névoa is a new black metal band from Portugal. Re Un is their second release, their debut coming out around this time last year. I remember listening to their debut, The Absence of Void, and really enjoying their bleak atmosphere and the distinctly Cascadian black metal sound. However, Re Un sees Névoa shifting their sound quite a bit, going from their Wolves in the Throne Room inspired sound to combination of two different sounds, one for each half of the album. The first half is more in line with psychedelic black metal like Aluk Todolo or Oranssi Pazuzu, while the second half of the album takes a heavier turn, reminding me of bands like Year of No Light and Altar of Plagues.

Album: Absence of Light

Label: Damnatio ad Bestias

Genre: Depressive Black Metal

It is now half way through 2016, and I am only now stumbling upon some depressive black metal that I really enjoy. Alene Misantropie is a new duo from Spain, and Absence of Light is their debut album. This album is in competition with Acjétêc by Sadness for best depressive black metal album of the year, although I am still holding patiently for the long-awaited Coldworld release, Autumn. Regardless, if you enjoy depressive black metal, you cannot skip Absence of LightContinue reading
