Band: Blood Incantation

Album: Starspawn

Genre: Death Metal

Label: Dark Descent Records

Wow, what do I even say about this record? I mean, it’s so hard to describe, yet unquestionably good. No doubts, but that is something Blood Incantation is used to. With a handful of demos dating back from 2013, and EP and a split in 2015, this year we finally see what Blood Incantation at their largest. Or should I say most expansive? Either way, there is no question that the album is phenomenal.  Continue reading

Booze Control – The Lizard Rider (2016)

Band: Booze Control

Album: The Lizard Rider

Genre: Heavy Metal

Label: Infernö Records

There are all kinds of oddities to be found in the world of heavy metal. Some of them surround the lugubrious themes explored by the songwriters, others pertain to fantastically over-the-top album covers, and others simply boil down to band names with indecipherable meanings. And with this third release from German heavy metal band Booze Control, we find all of those nicely wrapped up into a single package. If it wasn’t enough to have a band name that could double as slang for an alcoholic rehabilitation programme, we also have an album cover depicting a woman shooting zombies with an automatic weapon whilst riding a mammoth iguana. And with song titles like “The Wizard”, “Rats in the Walls”, and “Vile Temptress”, well, I think you can check off all three categories quite easily.  Continue reading

The Wretched End – In These Woods, From These Mountains (2016)

Band: The Wretched End

Album: In These Woods, From These Mountains

Genre: Black/Death Metal

Label: Indie Recordings

The Wretched End is sort of a supergroup headed by Samoth of Emperor and features Cosmo of Windir and Nils Fjellstrom of Dark Funeral. The Wretched End started off a rather generic blackened thrash band and progressed towards blackened death metal with each release. In These Woods, From These Mountains, is certainly following along that track, for better or worse. Truthfully, I did not find the bands two previous full-lengths very exciting at all. Forgettable riffs with vocals that serve little to no purpose and the drumming barely draws attention to itself. Sadly, this record is no different.  Continue reading

Artist: Harakiri for the Sky

Album: III: Trauma

Label: Art of Propaganda

Genre: Post-Black Metal

The follow-up to 2014’s amazing Aokigahara has finally come! III: Trauma is Harakiri for the Sky’s third full length album. Their second album, Aokigahara, was an amazing piece of music, and it made my top 10 albums list for that year. There are some really gorgeous riffs on that album, and Harakiri for the Sky was able to iron out all of the issues in production and pacing that held their debut back. The question that I was constantly asking while waiting for this album to drop was: will it live up to AokigaharaContinue reading

Silverbones – Wild Waves (2016)

Band: Silverbones

Album: Wild Waves

Genre: Heavy Metal

Label: Stormspell Records

Silverbones are a newer heavy metal band from Italy and this is their first full-length release after putting out a demo a couple years back. Anybody who knows me knows I love that old school heavy metal sound. It’s practically what I look for in almost everything I listen to. But I don’t just want mere imitators. Innovators are always preferred, provided they can hang onto that old school spirit that fuelled the great classics of the eighties. Well, this right here is probably one of the most blatant throwback bands I have ever heard. In terms the sound, they have completely nailed it: Silverbones are a maniacal reincarnation of Running Wild.  Continue reading
